Emerging artist Donna C. Stewart is inspired by the local landscape of the Saugeen Bruce Peninsula. Her work conveys the feelings of joy or solitude that our interactions with these places can bring. Donna believes that through informed, respectful interactions with the outdoors, whether it be through childhood play, sport, recreation or interest in the natural world, people come to understand and appreciate the environment and, ultimately, develop a desire to protect it. She thinks it is essential to the future of the Saugeen Bruce Peninsula that this concept be nurtured and celebrated through the arts that come from Ontario’s ‘natural retreat.'

Conserving Nature, Preserving Hope by Donna C. Stewart

  • Artwork Description

This beautiful pastel painting won "First in Show" and the "People's Choice" awards at the Shoreline artists "Just the Best" exhibition in Southampton in October 2023. Congratulations, Donna!

This piece was inspired by a plein air outing with Saugeen Bruce Peninsula Plein Air at Maple Cross Nature Reserve, facilitated by Marg Glendon, Outreach and Membership Director of the Peninsula Bruce Trail Club. I am always struck by the generosity of those who donate land to the Bruce Trail Conservancy and the dedication of the volunteers who work tirelessly on the peninsula and elsewhere to protect precious places, make them accessible, and restore habitats --- even in the midst of a summer when the world seemed to be on fire and many feel discouraged. This is a nod to those who ensure the future of the Bruce Trail and our precious places.
