GPS Parking Coordinates
The Bruce Trail Conservancy and the Peninsula Bruce Trail Club have provided links to public off-road and roadside parking areas for the convenience of people wishing to access the Bruce Trail. The Conservancy and the Club cannot guarantee the availability, nor the safety and security, of these public parking areas.
Bruce Trail Reference, Recommended Parking, Peninsula Section Only
The Bruce Trail Reference is the official guide for the Bruce Trail and is sold by the Bruce Trail Conservancy. It, along with the PBTC Bruce Peninsula Day Hike Guide, has maps, trail descriptions and recommended parking. To read more about these maps and how and where to buy them check the PBTC Maps web page.
Listed below are the coordinates (as a latitude/longitude) of recommended parking locations for the Peninsula Section of the Bruce Trail. Some of these locations are roadside parking on the shoulder of gravel roads so parking is at your own risk. Remember that roadside conditions vary from season to season.
When you park your vehicle do not block any gateways/entrances to properties including unopened road allowances. Such entrances are used by the property owners (e.g. farmers) and sometimes by emergency vehicles.
Explanation of GPS Coordinates
In rural areas where the Bruce Trail crosses a back country road there is no regular urban-type street address that works well in online services like Google Maps, Google Earth or MapQuest in an in-car GPS.
Each set of coordinates listed in the table below is a series of numerical digits like 44.836398,-81.054298. The first number is the latitude of the location (position north of the equator) and is in decimal degrees (no minutes & seconds). The second number is the longitude. Note that the longitude has a negative (minus, -) sign. Services like Google Maps and MapQuest interpret the negative sign to mean west of Greenwich meridian, the universal Prime Meridian or zero point of longitude.
If you copied 44.83637786170,-81.05441057510 including the comma and negative sign and went to Google Maps and pasted the number sequence into "Search Maps" it would provide you with a map of the location. In this case it is on Wright's Crescent, north east of Wiarton, where the road bends 90o. This is one of the recommended parking locations in the Bruce Trail Reference, Edition26 along the trail at the Purple Valley Access Trail. This example is depicted below.
Using Lat/Long Coordinates in Your In-Car GPS Receiver
If you own an in-car GPS you may be able to enter the coordinates, rather than a conventional street address. Being able to enter the coordinates will depend on the age, make and model of GPS. - The latitude/longitude coordinates listed below should be used along with the corresponding Bruce Trail Reference "Recommended Parking" Map page(s). The Bruce Trail Reference provides other parking details not listed here.
- Longitudes in this table have a negative or minus sign (-) that is translated by Google Maps as west of Greenwich meridian, the universal Prime Meridian or zero point of longitude.
Determining the Parking Location on the Google Maps Image
